Another unimaginably stressful blow for Kate and her young family won’t dim the light of hope still carrying them through.
Johannesburg, South Africa (10 April 2026) – Just over two weeks ago, we shared Kate’s story. Kate is a wife, a mom, and she is now also a cancer warrior.
In October last year, she was diagnosed with stage 4 liver and colon cancer. Ever since, she’s been fighting for her health and trying to hold her family – especially her four young children – through what has been one of their darkest and most uncertain periods.
“I am a mom to two incredible children and a proud stepmom to two more. Our home is filled with love, laughter, and the beautiful chaos of raising four kids together. Every day, my purpose has been simple, to give them a safe, happy, and stable life, and to be there for every moment that matters.”
The shadow that cancer has cast upon her and her loved ones has been heavy. Holding it all together for the sake of her family has been difficult, but Kate has pushed through.
She endured six cycles of chemotherapy before the treatment stopped working. Through it all she has carried on working, too. Becoming a single-income household is not an option for the family, especially now as the costs for the life-changing treatment she needs falls entirely on their shoulders.
This week, Kate shared the difficult news that her medical aid won’t cover the HER2 blocker treatment that she needs.
“It’s hard to put into words what that feels like. It honestly felt like the ground fell out from under me. After everything, the chemo, the fight, the hope we’ve been holding onto, being told ‘no’ feels like being asked to give up… and I’m just not ready to do that.”
Even in the midst of this, Kate’s hope grows stronger.
“I am still here. I am still fighting. And more than anything, I want more time. More time to hold my children. More time to laugh with them. More time to be their mom in all the ways that matter most.”

The treatment is her last real chance, one that she won’t give up on. Weeks ago, Kate created an online crowdfunding campaign that would help her raise funds and hold onto the single glimmer of hope that the HER2 blocker treatment could bring.
“Asking for help is one of the hardest things I have ever had to do. But I am holding onto hope and doing everything I can to keep fighting, not just for myself, but for my family, and for the life we have built together.” she wrote.
Within two days of the call going out, Kate’s community, along with compassionate supporters who have never met her but feel her pain, managed to raise over R100,000. Now, weeks later, 51% of Kate’s R500,000 has already been met. 194 angels who all stepped in to carry the burden with this family.
As it stands, with her medical cover now being denied, Kate will likely need a lot more than R500,000 to walk the path ahead. The financial burden that comes with illness like cancer isn’t one this young family can carry alone, and with enough help, it won’t be.
“Today, I’m asking, from the deepest, most vulnerable place in my heart, please keep sharing my story. If you’re able to donate, no matter how small, it brings me one step closer to being able to access this treatment. And if you can’t, sharing this post could help it reach someone who can.” she writes. “This campaign is giving me something my medical aid won’t, a chance at more time. And right now, time is everything.”
When we stick together, doing what we can in compassion and love for others, miracles can happen. If you’d like to be a part of Kate’s, support her by following this link.
