Human Rights Commissioner Participates in High-Level Meeting on Human Rights Education and Training

The Commissioner for Human Rights, Humanitarian Action and Relations with Civil Society, Mr. Sid’Ahmed Ould Benane, participated on Tuesday in Geneva in the proceedings of a high-level meeting organized on the occasion of the fifteenth anniversary of the adoption of the United Nations Declaration on Human Rights Education and Training, on the sidelines of the 63rd session of the Human Rights Council.

In an address delivered on behalf of the Mauritanian delegation, the Commissioner reaffirmed the commitment of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania to the importance of human rights education and training, considering them an essential pillar for consolidating the values of dignity, equality, tolerance, non-discrimination, and mutual respect.

He presented national efforts deployed in this field, highlighting the place occupied by education, training, and awareness-raising within the National Strategy for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights (2024–2028), as well as the efforts made by our country to strengthen the integration of human rights principles and values into the educational system—notably within the framework of implementing the ‘Republican School’ project—in addition to actions aimed at building the capacities of public actors and civil society organizations.

The Commissioner stressed the importance of strengthening international cooperation, exchanging experiences and best practices, providing technical assistance, and supporting capacity-building efforts in accordance with the priorities and needs of States, while taking into account national and cultural specificities within the framework of commitment to the principle of the universality of human rights.

In conclusion, he renewed Mauritania’s commitment to continuing its efforts to make human rights education a lever for consolidating the rule of law, promoting citizenship, and preserving human dignity.
