By Zoila Palma: Three weeks after Indian Creek Alcalde Marcus Canti was reportedly abducted and beaten, Maya leaders and village authorities held a joint press conference to discuss the incident and ongoing tensions surrounding disputed lands in southern Belize.
The conference, organized by the Maya Leaders Alliance and the Toledo Alcaldes Association, also focused on the long-running conflict over Maya customary land rights and the implementation of the 2015 Caribbean Court of Justice consent order.
Speaking publicly for the first time since the incident, Canti alleged that he was attacked and kidnapped while visiting his farm on April 13. “I was suddenly attacked, hit, and forcefully taken,” Canti said.
He claimed he was able to recognize some of the attackers by their voices and warned that “my life is at high risk.”
Canti also criticized the pace of the police investigation, saying police have failed to provide regular updates. “Every time we have to try to call to ask for updates and not much is being done,” he said. “It appears to me that they are not taking this matter seriously.” He maintained that the incident was genuine, stating, “A crime happened against me, I have no reason to make this up.”
Many villagers believe that issues began arising when Ya’axche Conservation Trust moved into Golden Stream.
