By Zoila Palma: Five people were killed and five others injured Sunday after an Amazon cargo plane overran the runway at Miami International Airport, striking several vehicles before coming to a stop. Three of the injured victims were reportedly in critical condition and were transported to local hospitals for treatment.

The Boeing 767-300, operated by 21 Air as Flight 2I7598, was traveling from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico, to Miami.

The aircraft landed shortly before 2 p.m. but overran the runway, crushing at least one vehicle and trapping people inside others. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue dispatched more than 60 emergency units to the scene, where crews also worked to contain a fuel leak from the aircraft.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched an investigation, while the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is expected to lead the probe into what caused the crash.

Investigators are examining several possibilities, including whether the aircraft touched down within the designated landing zone, mechanical problems, weather conditions and strong winds. Reports indicated thunderstorms and winds of about 17 knots, with gusts reaching 26 knots, around the time of the incident.
