International News: Heat wave scorches U.S. as millions face alerts and temperatures near 120°F

By Zoila Palma:  A dangerous heat wave is gripping large parts of the United States, with more than 39 million people under heat alerts as temperatures soar across the South and Southwest.

Temperatures have climbed above 100°F in several cities, while highs of 119°F were recorded Thursday near Topock, Arizona, and Tecopa, California, according to the National Weather Service.

The heat dome that previously brought extreme temperatures to central and eastern parts of the country has shifted west and is expected to intensify before spreading into the Intermountain West and northern High Plains.

Parts of the Southwest could see temperatures between 110°F and 120°F through early next week, with some areas potentially experiencing one of their 10 hottest days on record, Yahoo reports.

Extreme heat warnings are in effect across parts of Arizona, California, Nevada, Utah, Oklahoma and western Arkansas, including major population centers and popular national parks. Heat index values could reach 120°F in parts of southern Arizona and South Texas, while overnight temperatures are expected to remain dangerously high, offering little relief from the heat.
