Belize Rural North Area Representative rejects voter transfer “incentives”, says resources should benefit community

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Today, Belize Rural North Area Representative Marconi Leal publicly rejected the practice of offering incentives to encourage voters to transfer into a constituency, saying he will not compromise his principles or divert resources away from community development to increase the voters list.

Leal described the voter transfer period as a “stressful season” for area representatives and said he has faced direct requests from individuals seeking payment in exchange for transferring and voting for him.

“As much as I want to increase my voters list, I will not do it at the expense of having to give ‘something’ before you have even had the opportunity to vote for me,” Leal wrote.

He questioned the commitment of individuals who transfer into the constituency for incentives and later move their registration elsewhere, describing them as “jumpers” who, in his view, have little interest in the long-term development of the communities he serves.

Leal said he has been receiving messages from people asking, “What are you willing to give me to transfer and vote for you!?” He criticized what he described as a transactional approach to voter transfers, arguing that some individuals are more concerned about what they can receive than the development of the constituency.

The area representative said he remains focused on serving the 24 villages in Belize Rural North and responding to their development priorities. “If I were to lose the next elections because of not doing so then so be it,” Leal said adding that he would rather use available resources to support residents and communities than pay individuals to transfer their votes.

Leal said he welcomes eligible voters who seek guidance on polling locations, electoral boundaries or limited transportation assistance, saying such requests demonstrate concern for their communities and country.
