By Zoila Palma: The 2026 FIFA World Cup officially kicked off in the United States on Friday with a vibrant opening ceremony in Los Angeles, marking the first time since 1994 that the country has hosted matches on home soil.
Southern California native Katy Perry headlined the pre-match entertainment, taking the stage shortly before the players entered the field for the United States’ opening game against Paraguay.
The star-studded ceremony also featured performances by Grammy-winning South African singer Tyla, Brazilian singer-songwriter Anitta, and LISA of the K-pop group Blackpink. Earlier performances included rapper Future and other chart-topping artists. The tournament, being jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, is the largest World Cup in history, featuring 48 competing nations.
Thousands of fans gathered around the Los Angeles Coliseum ahead of kickoff, creating a festive atmosphere. Among them were supporters dressed as iconic American figures including Elvis Presley, George Washington, Uncle Sam, and Davy Crockett. Fans travelled from across the country to be part of the historic event, with many saying the experience and atmosphere made the long journey worthwhile.
The celebrations extended beyond Los Angeles. Canada hosted its own opening ceremony in Toronto featuring Alanis Morissette and Michael Bublé, while Mexico City’s opening match included performances by Shakira and Burna Boy.
Hollywood celebrities including Owen Wilson, Paris Hilton, Sofia Vergara, and Jason Sudeikis were also in attendance as the 2026 World Cup began with excitement across all three host nations.
