By Zoila Palma: France’s Kylian Mbappé has moved into the lead in the race for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Golden Boot after scoring his eighth goal of the tournament in France’s quarterfinal victory over Morocco.
Although Mbappé and Argentina captain Lionel Messi are tied on eight goals, the French forward leads the standings with three assists, compared to Messi’s one, giving him the tiebreaker advantage.
Mbappé scored in the 60th minute against Morocco before setting up Ousmane Dembélé for France’s second goal six minutes later. The goal marked Mbappé’s 20th career World Cup goal, leaving him just one behind Messi, who currently holds the all-time men’s World Cup scoring record with 21 goals.
Messi also continued his impressive tournament after helping Argentina rally from a two-goal deficit to defeat Egypt in the Round of 16.
The 39-year-old assisted one goal before scoring the equalizer and has now found the net in nine consecutive World Cup appearances, including six straight knockout-stage matches dating back to the 2022 tournament.
Norway’s Erling Haaland remains close behind the two leaders with seven goals, while England captain Harry Kane has six and remains in contention after contributing a goal and an assist in his side’s Round of 16 victory over Mexico.
