By Zoila Palma: Argentina will look to continue its World Cup title defense today when it faces Austria in Arlington, Texas. Led by Lionel Messi, Argentina opened group play with a 3-0 victory over Algeria, with Messi scoring two second-half goals in a standout performance.
Messi’s display reinforced his importance to Argentina’s hopes of winning back-to-back World Cup titles. His goals came in different ways, highlighting the veteran star’s continued influence on the world stage.
Austria also began its campaign with a win, defeating Jordan 3-1. After Jordan equalized in the 50th minute through Ali Olwan, Austria regained the lead 26 minutes later thanks to an own goal before securing the victory.
