International News: Messi set to become majority owner of Spanish Second-Tier Club Eldense

By Zoila Palma:  Argentine football superstar Lionel Messi is set to become the majority owner of Spanish second-tier club CD Eldense after reaching an agreement in principle to acquire shares from the team’s previous owners, Colombian investment group TH.

Eldense confirmed the development on Thursday, saying the agreement with Messi has been reached but that final legal and contractual details are still being reviewed. The proposed takeover is also subject to mandatory approval from Spain’s Higher Sports Council (CSD), Yahoo reports.

If completed, the acquisition would mark Messi’s first ownership of a professional football club in Spain.

The 39-year-old Inter Miami forward, who is in his fourth season in Major League Soccer, already owns fifth-tier Spanish club UE Cornellà.

Eldense recently secured promotion to the Segunda División but have struggled early in the new campaign, sitting third from bottom after four matches. The club is based in the city of Elda, which has a population of about 55,000, while its stadium has a capacity of approximately 5,800 spectators.

Messi’s move into club ownership adds another chapter to the career of one of football’s most decorated players.
