By Zoila Palma: Aid organizations have warned that Venezuela’s already fragile healthcare system is nearing its limit almost a week after two powerful earthquakes devastated parts of the country, AP reports.
Hospitals damaged by the quakes and already suffering from staff shortages are struggling to cope with a growing number of injured patients, while concerns mount over the spread of infectious diseases among thousands of displaced residents.
The government said rescue efforts have slowed dramatically, with only four people found alive on Monday after more than 5,300 rescues were reported during the first two days following the earthquakes. On Tuesday, authorities announced the rescue of a toddler who survived six days trapped beneath a collapsed building.
Officials have placed the death toll at more than 1,900, although experts believe the true number is significantly higher as recovery teams continue to uncover bodies from the rubble.
The humanitarian situation continues to worsen as United Nations agencies estimate the earthquakes generated 1.2 million tons of debris and left more than 15,800 people displaced.
Thousands are now sleeping in cars, parks and overcrowded shelters with limited access to sanitation, food and clean water.
The World Health Organization has warned that these conditions increase the risk of outbreaks of diseases such as measles, dengue, yellow fever and malaria, particularly due to low vaccination rates and poor hygiene.
According to Venezuelan authorities, 38 hospitals were damaged or compromised by the earthquakes, with several no longer operating and others overwhelmed by trauma cases.
The World Health Organization said overcrowding, surgical backlogs and deteriorating safety standards are placing immense pressure on healthcare workers, while the loss of medical specialists has further strained services.
