Saint Lucia’s Jenneil Jacobie picked up right where she left off at East Texas A&M University, winning the women’s high jump title at the Southland Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships on February 25. The 21-year-old from Grande Riviere, Gros Islet, cleared 1.75m for victory at the Birmingham Crossplex in Birmingham, Alabama.
Jacobie, the 2024 outdoor champion, missed the 2025 season due to injury, but she has come back with a bang. Earlier this season, she cleared a personal-best 1.87m and has been among the top 10 jumpers in NCAA Division I.
On Thursday, Jacobie entered the competition at 1.69m, long after most of the 20 athletes had packed their bags. In fact, only three other athletes remained in contention at that height, which the Saint Lucian cleared in one go.
Iradi Blasco of Nicholls State and Amara Idinna of East Texas A&M also went over at 1.69m, though both needed all three tries. At 1.72m, the competition came down to the ETAMU teammates, Jacobie and Idinna. Spaniard Blasco was unable to negotiate that height, whilst the Lions women both took all three trials to reduce the field to just two.
Already in unknown territory with a previous career-best of 1.68m, Idinna of France had to settle for the silver. She was unable to jump 1.75m, a height with which Jacobie secured the gold medal on her first try.
Jacobie, the Southland Conference record holder in the high jump, now awaits word on her participation in the NCAA Division I Championships.
