*After falling short in her bid for a Texas U.S. Senate seat, former Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett is turning her attention back to her roots, signaling a potential return to the legal profession while also setting her sights on a book project.
Crockett, a seasoned public defender and civil rights attorney, lost the Texas Democratic Senate primary to state Representative James Talarico on March 3. With 94% of votes counted by the morning of March 4, Talarico had secured just under 53% of the vote compared to Crockett’s nearly 46%, per the Associated Press. Upon conceding, Crockett encouraged fellow Democrats to remain united, saying Texas is “primed to turn blue” and reminding supporters that the fight is “bigger than any one person.”
The race was a financial mismatch from the start. Campaign finance records show Crockett’s campaign brought in $8,577,757.47 in total receipts during the final stretch of the race, while Talarico collected more than $20,683,458.89. Crockett closed out the campaign with $3,484,885.09 remaining in cash on hand.

Now, with her congressional tenure behind her, Crockett is weighing her next chapter. During the latest episode of her Clock It with Crockett” podcast, she opened up about her plans. “But I’m a whole lawyer. So I will potentially go back to practice in law. I’m engaged in conversations with some law firms about what that would look like. I want to be semi-flexible as relates to the practice of law because I absolutely want to get to this book,” she said. Crockett was referring to a book she intends to write about her life experiences, which she describes as feeling like a “thriller.”
It would be a homecoming of sorts for the Texas native. Per her bio, Crockett launched her legal career at the Bowie County Public Defender’s Office, where she fought to keep children out of the criminal justice system and advocated for society’s most vulnerable. A licensed attorney in Texas, Arkansas, and Federal Courts, she holds a B.A. in Business Administration from Rhodes College and a J.D. from the University of Houston.
Crockett served as U.S. Representative for Texas’ 30th Congressional District beginning in January 2023, taking over a seat previously held for three decades by the late Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson. Before that, she made history in the Texas Legislature as the sole Black freshman and youngest Black lawmaker during the 87th Legislative Session.
