J.J. Spaun wins Texas Open, eyes second major at Masters

American golfer, J.J. Spaun has clinched his first title since winning the US Open last year. He recorded a one-shot victory at the Texas Open in San Antonio, closing with a five-under-par 67 to finish the tournament with a 17-under aggregate, 271 – one shot clear of the British pair of Matt Wallace and Robert MacIntyre, as well as countryman Michael Kim.

MacIntyre closed with a 70 to share second place with Wallace who finished with a 68 and Kim a 69. Ludvig Aberg shared fifth place with Andrew Putnam.

Aberg closed with a 70, while Putnam needed just a birdie on the 18th to force a playoff, but hit a wedge into the back bunker, making bogey for a 70.

This was Spaun’s third PGA TOUR title, having won the US Open and now a second Texas Open title.

The 35-year-old will head to Augusta for this week’s Masters at Augusta in good form and in search of a second major championship.
