In a remarkable blend of innovation, healthcare and renewable energy, 23 students at Solar Team Eindhoven have developed Stella Juva, described as the world’s first solar-powered ambulance. The innovative vehicle has successfully completed an 800-kilometre trial across Kenya’s rugged terrain, demonstrating how clean energy can potentially transform healthcare delivery in remote communities.
Stella Juva is designed to bring essential medical services directly to patients, particularly in areas where access to hospitals, electricity and fuel can be challenging.
A Mobile Hospital Powered by the Sun
Unlike conventional ambulances that depend on fuel to power their operations, Stella Juva uses rooftop solar panels to generate electricity for its medical equipment.
The ambulance is equipped with critical healthcare technology, including an X-ray machine, ultrasound scanner, defibrillator and vaccine refrigeration system. Its solar panels are designed to generate more energy than the vehicle and its medical equipment consume while operating.
This means the ambulance can potentially provide medical services in locations where there is limited or no access to the electricity grid.
Successful Trial in Kenya
The solar-powered ambulance was tested in Kenya in August in collaboration with Amref Health Africa. During a two-day trial, Stella Juva reportedly supported about 200 people, providing diagnostic services and medical care without relying on the electricity grid or fuel stations.
The successful test highlights the potential of renewable energy-powered healthcare solutions in remote and underserved communities.
Tackling Healthcare Access Through Innovation
For many rural communities, getting medical attention can involve travelling long distances to reach a healthcare facility. Stella Juva offers a different approach by taking healthcare services closer to patients.
