Kirk Franklin to Host the 2026 Stellar Awards as Gospel’s Biggest Night Comes to Charlotte

Gospel music’s biggest night will call Charlotte home as the 2026 Stellar Awards take place at The Spectrum Center on August 15, bringing one of the most celebrated events in faith-based entertainment to a thriving new market.

The announcement was met with enthusiasm from local leaders during the Stellar Network Upfront and 41st annual awards nomination announcements. Walter L. Bowers Jr., Director of Governor Josh Stein’s Charlotte Office, expressed excitement about the event’s impact on the city and the surrounding region.

Another major announcement came when Kirk Franklin was officially named host of the 2026 Stellar Awards.  Few artists have shaped gospel music and culture quite like Franklin, making the selection feel both fitting and exciting for fans and industry professionals alike.

“Nobody does the level of excellence like the community of gospel music,” Franklin shared. “I’m very humbled, very proud, very excited, and very grateful that we’re going to be in Charlotte for a while.”

The event also highlighted the continued growth and influence of gospel music. Organizers revealed that the Stellar Awards generated an impressive 9 billion impressions in 2025 and ranked as the number one awards show among Black viewers across cable and syndication. Additional data showed Christian and Gospel music experienced an 18.5% increase in U.S. on-demand audio streaming in 2025, making it one of the fastest-growing genres in the country.

Perhaps even more encouraging was the discussion around faith engagement among younger generations. According to data shared from The Washington Post, worship attendance among adults under 30 increased from 19 percent in 2020 to 25 percent in 2025, signaling renewed interest in faith and spiritual community.

The legendary Shirley Caesar was also present to help announce nominees and reflected on the deeper purpose behind the music. This year’s nominees represent both legendary excellence and the future of gospel music.

Among the notable names announced were Jekalyn Carr, Erica Campbell, John P. Kee, Jonathan McReynolds, Sounds of Blackness, Mariah Carey, and The Clark Sisters.  “We love the Lord. We’re not going to just sing it, we’re going to live it,” said Caesar. “I’m grateful and glad to be here.”

The 41st Annual Stellar Awards will recognize artists across numerous categories, including HBCU Choir of the Year, Song of the Year, Music Video of the Year, Duo/Chorus Group of the Year, and Rap/Hip Hop Gospel Album of the Year.

The celebration will begin before the awards night, with a special Stellar Awards Pre-Show scheduled for Friday, August 14, at Charlotte’s historic Carolina Theatre.

As the Stellar Awards prepare to enter a new chapter in Charlotte, one thing remains clear: gospel music is expanding, evolving, and continuing to reach new audiences. If the energy surrounding this year’s announcement is any indication, the Queen City is ready to welcome gospel’s biggest night with open arms.
