Representative Scott passed away at the age of 80 on April 22. Representative Scott was member of the Congressional Black Caucus and acted as the first Black chairperson of the House Agricultural Committee, where he worked tirelessly on behalf of his constituents and Black farmers across the country to craft Farm Bills, fund crucial disaster assistance, and secure tens of millions of dollars for Historically Black Land-Grant Colleges and Universities. Representative Scott was also a staunch advocate for expanded health care, education, and veterans’ services.  LDF President and Director-Counsel Janai Nelson issued the following statement:  “The people of Georgia lost a fierce ally in Representative Scott, a public servant whose efforts in both the state and federal legislatures were characterized by a clear and unflinching dedication to Georgia residents.  “Representative Scott worked tirelessly on behalf of Black Georgians, and he fought valiantly to defend his constituents’ rights. His endeavors secured critical funding for socioeconomic programs to support Black communities across the state and country, helping carve a path toward a more prosperous future. “His distinguished service will be long remembered, not only in the halls of Congress, but among the people of the state which he loved so deeply – and that he spent over 40 years of his life working for its betterment. The leadership and zeal Representative Scott brought to Congress will be sorely missed. LDF sends our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and staff as we mourn his loss.”
