Leader of the Opposition: “Removing income from over 500 people is socially reckless”

By Zoila Palma: Leader of the Opposition Tracy Panton issued a statement saying that the Leadership Intervention Unit was presented to the Belizean people as a major anti-violence intervention strategy.

“It was intended to help at-risk youth move away from violence, develop discipline, acquire skills, and find a more productive path. If the program has failed to deliver on that promise, then the answer is not a sudden shutdown with no clear safety net. The answer is a serious audit, a transparent report to the Belizean people, and a responsible transition plan for those who have depended on this income,” Panton said.

“Belize City is already under the weight of a State of Emergency. Communities are tense. Families are under pressure from the high cost of living, unemployment, crime, and fear. To remove income from over 500 people without a clear alternative is socially reckless,” Panton added.

Panton says that the “523 Belizeans and their families who have now been displaced are not mere numbers on a spreadsheet. They are fathers, sons, mothers, daughters, and marginalized young people living in some of the most vulnerable communities in Belize City. “

“All governments have a sacred the duty and a responsibility to care for its citizens, especially the most vulnerable among us. It cannot be that young men from impoverished communities on the south side are written off forever because they may have had a troubled past or made mistakes.

In my considered view, everyone  who is prepared to work honestly, contribute meaningfully, and become a productive member of society should be given that opportunity. Let us work together to find solutions that will produce the desired results. We know that similar intervention programs worked effectively under a previous UDP Administration when properly managed, monitored, and connected to real opportunities,” Panton further added.

Panton further said that if the current administration should pull the plug it should do so on nepotism.

If this administration wants to pull the plug, then it should pull the plug on nepotism.

The Leader of the Opposition says that vulnerable communities must not be abandoned without a responsible plan.
