By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The United Democratic Party says it welcomes Belize’s trade unions joining its call for the immediate removal of Markhelm Lizarraga as Chairman of Belize Telemedia Limited.
In a statement released today, the party said it was the first to demand Lizarraga’s removal after the BTL Board approved the proposed $80 million SMART/SpeedNet acquisition.
“Our position remains clear: public assets require public accountability,” the release states.
The UDP argues that Cabinet’s later rejection of the deal does not settle the matter. According to the party, the rejection “does not erase the Board’s decision or absolve its Chairman or the appointing Government of responsibility.”
The party is again calling for Lizarraga’s immediate removal, framing the issue as one of governance rather than politics.
“This is a matter of governance. Markhelm Lizarraga must go,” the statement concludes.
The proposed acquisition drew sustained public criticism before Cabinet turned it down. BTL is majority owned by the Government of Belize, and the party maintains that decisions taken at the board level on that scale demand a public accounting.
The UDP has not indicated what further steps it will take if the call is not met.
