By Zoila Palma: Belizean Master Drummer and cultural ambassador Emmeth Young has been honored with the Leela Vernon Award for Creative Community Action for his longstanding contribution to preserving and promoting Belize’s cultural heritage.
Young, a native of Gales Point Manatee, has dedicated much of his life to keeping Kriol traditions and ancestral music alive.
As founder of the Maroon Creole Drum School in Punta Gorda, Young teaches traditional drumming while hand-carving authentic instruments, including the sambai, djembe and brokdong.
Through his work, he passes on the art of rhythmic storytelling and helps ensure that important cultural traditions continue to be practiced by younger generations.
Young is also known for his “Drums Not Guns” initiative, which uses music and creativity to empower Belizean youth and promote positive alternatives.
His advocacy for Belizean arts and culture also contributed to efforts to secure UNESCO recognition for the Bram and Sambai traditions, further cementing his legacy as a guardian of Belize’s living cultural heritage.
