The Minister of Economic Affairs and Development, M. Abdallahi Souleimane Cheikh Sidiya, signed this Friday in Nouakchott, with His Excellence the Ambassador and Head of Delegation of the European Union to Mauritania, M. Joaquín Tasso Vilallonga, two financing conventions between the Islamic Republic of Mauritania and the European Union, for a global amount of 40 million euros.
The first convention concerns the financing of the “Southern Borders” project, to the tune of 25 million euros (or nearly 1.15 billion MRU). This project aims to reinforce stability, improve living conditions, and support the economic and social development of populations living in the border areas of the south of the country.
The second convention concerns the fourth health sector support program (PASS), financed to the tune of 15 million euros (approximately 690 million MRU). This program aims to reinforce human development and sustainably improve access to health services, with particular attention paid to the most vulnerable populations, notably women and girls.
During the signing ceremony, the Minister of Economic Affairs and Development stressed that these two conventions are fully in line with national priorities in terms of development and stability. They also integrate into the major orientations of the program of the President of the Republic, M. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, implemented by the government led by the Prime Minister, M. Moctar Ould Djay, through projects and programs aiming to improve the living conditions of citizens and to promote local development.
For his part, the Ambassador of the European Union to Mauritania indicated that these two programs constitute essential pillars of European support for the inclusive development and stability of the country. He recalled that the European Union has been accompanying Mauritania’s efforts in the health sector since 2017, a cooperation that has allowed significant results to be obtained in the reinforcement of health services.
He added that access to quality health care is a fundamental right and an essential lever for human development. In this regard, the PASS program will contribute to the extension of health coverage by 2030, to the reinforcement of the National Health Insurance Fund (CNAM), to the improvement of the quality of care, to the reduction of barriers to accessing health services, as well as to the continuation of support for voluntary health insurance mechanisms and for structures providing care for victims of gender-based violence.
