Defending champions Argentina lock horns with record African champions Egypt in the round of 16 at the Atlanta stadium with a quarter final berth at stake.

The South Americans eliminated another African nation, Cape Verde 3-2 in the previous round and this will be the third time this campaign that Lionel Messi and company face an African nation after they also faced Algeria in the group stages.

Reaching the knocking out stages for the first time, Egypt overcame Australia on penalties following a 1-1 draw and now have Argentina in their faces.

The clash has Messi vs Mohamed Salah written all over it but it is beyond the two icons of the game.

Either Switzerland or Colombia will pose the next threat to Argentina’s title credentials if the holders can eliminate Egypt in the last 16, a stage in which La Albiceleste have won seven of their last nine World Cup games, only failing in 1994 and 2018 during that sequence.
