Mexico became the first country to qualify for the Round of 32 stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The tournament co-hosts overcame South Korea 1-0 at the Estadio Guadalajara in Zapopan.
Luis Francisco Romo Barron scored the match winner in the 50th minute as Mexico made it 2-out-of-2 to qualify for the round of 32, with a match to spare.
Romo, a midfielder at C.D Guadalajara in the Mexican Primera Division, was positioned to capitalise on a mistake by goalkeeper Kim Min Jae, who failed to tame a high ball.

Earlier in the same group, South Africa recovered from a goal down to draw one-all with Czechia at the Atlanta stadium.
Michal Sadilek gave Czechia the lead on 6 minutes.
South Africa replied with 7 minutes to end the game through Teboho Mokoena’s well-drilled penalty.
This was the first point earned by Czechia and South Africa in the championship, having lost their opening duels 1-2 and 0-2 to South Korea and Mexico, respectively.
Julian Andres Quinones and Raul Jimenez scored for Mexico past South Africa in the official opening match of the tournament, played before a fully packed Mexico City stadium.
