ZIMBABWE’S senior women’s national football team, the Mighty Warriors, stormed into the Four Nations tournament final after defeating Lesotho 3-1 at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola, Zambia, Saturday.
The victory ensured a positive outing for coach Sithethelelwe “Kwinji 15” Sibanda and her charges following a disappointing outing at the Women Confederation of Southern African Football (COSAFA) Cup earlier this year.
The Mighty Warriors opened their scoring account in the 30th minute through team captain Emmaculate Musipa, hence they went to the break leading 1-0.
Lesotho came back for the second half with determination, as they managed to equalise 13 minutes into the second half to level it 1-1, a goal which pushed Zimbabwe out of the comfort zone.
Zimbabwe substitute Ethel Chinyarara scored 10 minutes later to make it 2-1 before veteran forward Rutendo Makore sealed victory in the 85th minute to make it 3-1.
Speaking after the match, Mighty Warriors coach Sibanda could not hide her joy.
“We play to win and as a coach when you win you are happy. Credit goes to the team, they really played well, especially managing to restore our win after we had conceded an equaliser. I think that is the character we want,” she said.
Saturday’s victory saw Zimbabwe booking a place into the final where they will face Zambia who beat Lesotho on penalties.
