*Morgan Freeman has been many things — actor, director, narrator, and environmental advocate. But since 2014, he has added an unexpected title to that list: beekeeper.

That summer, Freeman went public with a project he had already set in motion — turning his sprawling 124-acre Mississippi property into a working bee sanctuary, 3DEF reports. Weeks before the reveal, he had brought 26 hives across state lines from Arkansas and begun reshaping the land to accommodate them. During the early adjustment period, he sustained the colonies with sugar and water until they settled in. Over time he cultivated the grounds with magnolia, clover, lavender, and various fruit trees chosen specifically to support bee health, per All That’s Interesting.

Freeman’s motivation stemmed from a growing environmental crisis. The EPA formally identified the rapid disappearance of honeybee populations as “Colony Collapse Disorder” in 2006, and a USDA-supported survey from 2016 found that nearly half of all managed bee colonies had been wiped out within a single twelve-month stretch. The 2018 approval of a bee-killing pesticide by the Trump administration only deepened concerns among conservationists and made private sanctuaries like Freeman’s increasingly vital.

True to his connection with the species, Freeman opted against wearing a standard beekeeper’s suit, insisting he had no need for one. “They have the outfits for people who can’t resonate [with the bees],” he said, suggesting his relationship with them required no barrier.

“There’s been a frightening loss of bee colonies, particularly in this country,” he said on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon in 2014. “To such an extent that the scientists are saying, ‘This is dangerous.’”

For Freeman, the issue extends well beyond his ranch. In 2014, he co-produced the climate change documentary “What’s Possible,” which made its debut before world leaders gathered at the United Nations Climate Summit. In his view, the fate of bees and the fate of the planet are inseparable. “There is a concerted effort for bringing bees back onto the planet,” he said. “We do not realize that they are the foundation, I think, of the growth of the planet, the vegetation.”
