Maputo (MOZTIMES) – The Mozambican government intends to use 200 million meticais (3.1 million US dollars, at the current exchange rate) to finance the reconstruction of irrigation schemes in the Limpopo Valley that were severely damaged in flooding earlier this year.

The money will come from revenues from Mozambique’s exports of natural gas. According to Agriculture Minister Roberto Albino, speaking on the sidelines of a national meeting on water, in the central province of Zambezia, this investment should drive the resumption of agricultural production in Gaza province, particularly of rice, in the areas severely hit by the flooding, such as the Chokwe and Lower Limpopo irrigation schemes.
