In a dramatic twist to the National Basketball League (NBL) season, relegation-threatened Nabisunsa Girls pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the year, dismantling the high-flying Pearl Queens 73-61 at the YMCA court on Saturday.
Driven by a spectacular, career-high performance from Abigail Mpoza, Nabisunsa sent a clear message to the rest of the league: they are not going down without a fight.
From the opening tip-off, Nabisunsa looked like a team possessed. They blindsided Pearl Queens with a blistering 21-10 run in the first quarter and never looked back.
Despite a short bench that contributed just four points and a staggering 29 turnovers, Nabisunsa made up for their mistakes with sheer grit and absolute dominance on the glass, outrebounding their opponents 55-41.
Abigail Mpoza was the undisputed star of the afternoon, torching the Pearl Queens ‘ defence for a phenomenal 34 points. She was a constant threat, filling out her stat sheet with five rebounds and five assists in what will be remembered as a career-defining performance.
But Mpoza didn’t do it alone. Nabisunsa’s frontcourt completely owned the paint, courtesy of two monster double-doubles. Keturah Joy Auma weaponised her athleticism to rack up 14 points and 12 rebounds, while Martha Yikiru anchored the interior with an imposing 13 points and 15 rebounds.
For the Pearl Queens, who walked into the match riding high on nine victories, the afternoon was nothing short of a nightmare. They struggled heavily from the perimeter, enduring a miserable 5-of-30 shooting display from beyond the arc.
Namuleme Fildauce fought hard to rescue her side with 16 points, and Jane Chisom Iriele added 11, but the Queens lacked their usual offensive depth.
In a telling statistic of Nabisunsa’s defensive chokehold, Pearl Queens’ talisman Agatha Kamwada was completely neutralised, finishing scoreless in her 12 minutes on the hardwood.
While the victory marks only Nabisunsa’s third win of a gruelling season, it injects massive hope into their survival campaign. However, the math remains tricky.
Even if Nabisunsa wins their final five fixtures, a daunting slate that includes Victoria She Crocs, Angels, Miracle Eaglets, JT Lady Jaguars and JKL Lady Dolphins, their fate is no longer entirely in their own hands. They will need results elsewhere to go their way.
