Prominent chieftains of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in Nasarawa State, Zamani Daniel and Ibrahim Tukur, have raised an alarm over an alleged plot to rig the party’s primaries before it is conducted.
In a statement on Tuesday, the APC chieftains alleged large-scale compromise and intimidation of party officials in the state, putting their ability to conduct free and fair primaries under serious scrutiny.
This comes as the incumbent Governor Sule Abdullahi adopted Senator Ahmed Wadada as his preferred candidate.
According to Daniel and Tukur, the move by the governor has raised concerns about the credibility of the electoral process and the ability to guarantee other contenders a level playing ground.
They called on the National Secretary of the party and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene by drafting in fresh electoral officials rather than state officials, whom they accused of lacking “moral standing and courage to officiate over the elections.”
They alleged that Governor Sule has brought party officials at state, local government, and ward levels under intense pressure to not go against his stance on the governorship race.
“Senator Wadada and Governor Sule are holding clandestine meetings and bragging about purported instructions of President Bola Tinubu and Gilbert Chagoury to deliver Wadada at all costs.
“We know Mr. President to be a true democrat and a believer in upholding the wishes of the majority. We are alarmed that the primary election is already being rigged before it is conducted. We call on Mr. President, our national chairman, and all men of conscience to rise against this aberration,” they stated.
