*Netflix is giving fans their first real look at “Man on Fire,” and the trailer makes one thing clear — this is not your average revenge thriller.
The seven-episode series premieres April 30 and stars Emmy Award winner Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as John Creasy, a former Special Forces mercenary whose decorated past has been swallowed whole by severe PTSD. The new trailer paints a portrait of a man running from himself. Creasy is living in isolation, working warehouse shifts and keeping everyone at a distance.
“I’m pretty much a solo act at this point,” he says in the preview — to which Bobby Cannavale’s Paul Rayburn fires back: “Yeah, how’s that working out for you?”
Abdul-Mateen II described his character as someone who can show up for others but shuts down the moment vulnerability is required of him. That emotional paralysis is the engine driving the series.

Rayburn eventually draws Creasy back into the life he has been avoiding, pulling him to Brazil — where a skyscraper bombing shatters any hope of a quiet existence. In the aftermath, Creasy takes on the protection of Poe (Billie Boullet), Rayburn’s daughter and a witness to the attack. What starts as an assignment becomes something far more meaningful.
“I see a lot of myself in you,” Creasy tells Poe in the trailer — a line that signals the emotional core of the show. Abdul-Mateen described their bond as two people filling what the other is missing: Creasy rediscovering purpose, Poe finding something like family.
The series also promises serious action, including a prison break, intense hand-to-hand combat, and a stunt involving Creasy leaping from a moving vehicle onto a plane — a sequence that reportedly required a month of preparation alone, according to Tudum,
“Man on Fire” reimagines A.J. Quinnell’s book series with a character-driven lens, balancing psychological depth with cinematic scale. It drops on Netflix April 30. Watch the trailer above.
