*A proposed change in federal policy could soon make one of America’s most popular ready-to-eat grocery items available to more households. Lawmakers are reviewing a bill that would permit SNAP recipients to purchase hot rotisserie chicken, a longtime favorite for its affordability and convenience, All Recipes reports.

Under current rules, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program excludes hot prepared foods from eligible purchases. While shoppers can buy chilled rotisserie chicken from refrigerated sections, those sold hot are not covered. The Hot Rotisserie Chicken Act seeks to update that restriction. Introduced by a bipartisan group of senators, the measure focuses specifically on allowing hot rotisserie chicken purchases through SNAP rather than broadly expanding all prepared food eligibility.

Advocates for the change say the existing guideline creates unnecessary inefficiencies. “There is no nutritional difference. There is no logical difference. There is only an outdated technicality that forces grocery stores to heat chickens and cool them back down just to comply, wasting energy, degrading quality, and adding cost,” said Harrison Kircher of the National Chicken Council.

“Allowing folks on SNAP to buy hot rotisserie chickens is truly just commonsense. It’s as basic as you can get to help busy parents or grandparents put something as simple as this on the table to feed their families. We have to give people the option to put a healthy, protein-dense choice on the table that actually tastes good and doesn’t take an hour and a half to cook,” said Senator Jim Justice (R-WV) in joint statement released by Senator John Fetterman (D-PA).

Fetterman also highlighted the potential impact on families managing tight grocery budgets. “America’s best (and delicious) affordability play is Costco’s $4.99 rotisserie chicken,” he said, pointing to its reputation as a low-cost meal option. “It’s one of my family’s favorites, and I’m proud to join this bill with Senator [Jim] Justice for all to try. SNAP funds would be well spent to feed our nation’s families who need it.”

If approved, the proposal could broaden access to convenient food choices for SNAP participants. The legislation remains in its early phases, and questions remain about which retailers would take part if the policy is enacted.
