Nigeria’s grit delivers Kwibuka bronze in Kigali

Nigeria may have finished third at the Kwibuka Women’s T20 Tournament, but they earned that bronze medal the hard way.

In a tense and low-scoring playoff at the Gahanga International Cricket Stadium, the Nigerians held their nerve to defeat Brazil by two wickets in a match that swung back and forth until the final over.

After electing to field, Nigeria’s bowlers laid the foundation for victory. The star was Player of the Match Christabel Chukwuonye, who produced a superb spell of 3 for 13 from four overs. Her breakthrough maiden over removed Laura Cardoso before she returned later to dismantle Brazil’s lower middle order, bowling both Carolina Nascimento and Nicole Monteiro in the space of three deliveries.

Nigeria’s attack never allowed Brazil to escape. Oseyande Omonkhobhio struck twice in the powerplay, while Adeshola Adekunle and Rachael Samson chipped in with crucial wickets as Brazil struggled to build momentum.

Yet Brazil refused to go quietly. When wickets tumbled around her, captain Roberta Moretti stood firm. Arriving at the crease with her side under pressure, she anchored the innings with a fighting 19 from 26 balls, guiding Brazil through difficult phases and helping them reach 85 all out. Her resistance kept Brazil alive in a contest where every run felt priceless.

Nigeria’s chase was anything but comfortable. They stumbled to 11 for 3 and later 26 for 4 as Brazil’s bowlers sensed an upset. Maria Ribeiro ripped through the top order early, while Lara Moisés and Laura Cardoso continued to apply pressure.

The recovery came through patience rather than power. Adeshola Adekunle played a composed innings of 26, while Sarah Etim added a valuable 12 during a partnership that steadied the chase and dragged Nigeria back into contention.

Even then, the drama was far from over. Brazil struck twice in the 18th over, leaving Nigeria wobbling at 81 for 7. The match was hanging by a thread. But Favour Eseigbe showed remarkable composure under pressure, remaining unbeaten on 21 and steering her side through the final moments. When she pushed Carolina Nascimento for two runs with four balls remaining, Nigeria crossed the line at 86 for 8 and secured third place.

For Nigeria, it was a victory built on resilience. They were tested with both bat and ball, survived several nervous moments, and ultimately found a way to win. It was the kind of performance that summed up their tournament: never flashy, often under pressure, but fiercely competitive when it mattered most.

Beyond the result, the match carried special significance for Brazil captain Roberta Moretti. The playoff marked the final match of her cricket career, bringing an end to a journey that helped shape Brazilian women’s cricket.

Moretti’s last appearance was fittingly courageous. With Brazil in danger of collapsing, she stood tall and fought for every run, top-scoring with 19 and shepherding the lower order deep into the innings. Her determination gave Brazil a fighting total and nearly inspired a memorable farewell victory.

There was even one final contribution in the field. In the closing stages of Nigeria’s chase, Moretti produced a run-out to dismiss Jessica Bieni, briefly reigniting Brazilian hopes and reminding everyone of the competitive spirit that has defined her career.

Although Brazil fell just short, the occasion belonged as much to Moretti as it did to the medal winners. Her final act came in Kigali, at a tournament that celebrates resilience and remembrance, and it was a farewell marked by leadership, determination, and dignity.
