As the Women’s Rugby Premiership enters its closing phase, only the Thunderbirds and Nile Rapids are still standing as title contenders.
The Nile Rapids entered the title race last Saturday after defeating the Avengers at the Ruck Yard in Jinja. This victory was characterised by Tina Akello’s brilliance when she put 15 points past an Avengers’ side that the Rapids drew with six-all away in Entebbe. Akello scored all the points for the Rapids in that fixture.
In the return leg, the Avengers put up 12 points on the board through Peace Lekuru and Brenda Kansiime’s tries and Grace Nabaggala’s conversion, but that simply wasn’t enough.

On the other hand, the Thunderbirds asserted their dominance over the Ewes, winning 29-8 away in Makerere. That bonus point win took the Thunderbirds to 31 points at the top, but the Nile Rapids are just around the corner with 30 points.
This single point difference is going to be crucial for the rest of the season as the Thunderbirds and Rapids are remaining with fairly easy tests in the She Wolves and Ewes, respectively.
Unfortunately, the She Wolves were not able to travel for their game against the Panthers, so the Thunderbirds shall have to get creative if that game is to be played at all.
In an interesting development, the women’s clubs agreed to proceed with the league after May 2, instead of going for a break to enable the Lady Cranes to prepare for the Rugby Africa Women’s Cup.
Under this new arrangement, the clubs are going to play without some of their best players, which will make the title race even more interesting.
The Rapids shall be without players like Tina Akello and Unity Namulala, while the Thunderbirds shall lose a large number, including Lady Cranes Captain Angella Nanyonjo, with her compatriots like Proscovia Mukyala, Yvonne Najjuma, Samiya Ayikoru, to mention but a few.
