Opposition Leader criticizes use of State of Emergency, calls for national crime strategy

By Aaron Humes: The Leader of the Opposition Tracy Taegar-Panton has rejected the government’s use of a State of Emergency as a response to rising gun violence, calling it a “band aid fix” that shows the administration has “lost control of crime on our city streets.”

In a statement the Opposition Leader said Belizeans are “tired of the bloodshed” and “living in fear” amid escalating violence.

“We are a nation in grieving as we bury our young people,” the statement read. “Our streets are being overtaken by gun violence while this administration continues to react instead of lead.”

The Opposition Leader questioned the government’s approach, asking, “How many more lives must be lost before there is a real national crime strategy?”

The statement added that the Opposition has “offered, over and over” to assist with solutions to crime. It called on citizens to “demand more than temporary crackdowns and political talking points,” saying Belizeans “deserve safety, leadership, accountability, and results.”

The statement comes following a series of violent incidents reported across Belize City this week, including two fatal shootings on Thursday, May 7, which prompted the institution of a State of Emergency beginning Friday, May 8.
