Parliament opens new session with swearing‑in of senators

Newly appointed senators will take their Oath of Allegiance as the Parliament of Saint Lucia convenes for the first time since the December 1, 2025, General Elections.

The first sitting, scheduled for today, Tuesday, December 16, will also feature announcements by the Speaker of the House of Assembly, ministerial statements, and a motion from Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre.

The Prime Minister’s motion seeks to amend the Value Added Tax (VAT) Act to facilitate the implementation of the proposed VAT‑free day.

Today’s proceedings include the formal swearing‑in of senators appointed by Governor General Sir Errol Charles. The appointments, effective December 15, 2025, name two independent senators: Embert Charles and Deale A. L. Lee.

Government senators to be sworn in are Dr. Shanda Lee Harracksingh, Ignatius Jean, Alvina Reynolds, Dr. Virginia Poyotte, Dr. Allison A. Jean and Mtonya Deterville.

Opposition senators are Tommy Descartes, Elisha Norbert and Angelina Phera Polius.

Members of the House of Assembly are expected to meet at 10:00 a.m., followed by the Senate at 11:00 a.m., where all members will take their Oath of Allegiance. Both Houses will then meet in joint session to receive a message from His Excellency, the Governor General, Sir Errol Charles.
