A Legacy of Service: and a Powerful Salute to Women Veterans
Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) hosted “DAR Celebrates America 250! A Salute to Women Veterans” inside the iconic DAR Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C. The day started with D.C. area residents and visitors from near and far invited to attend DAR’s Birthday Party for America on April 18, a symbolic date commemorating the eve of the first battles of the American Revolution.
There were family-friendly activities throughout it’s headquarters, a National Historic Landmark that spans an entire block of downtown D.C. ; near the White House and National Mall. Guests were partaking in activities throughout the building. The DAR Museum had permanent and rotating exhibitions offering a glimpse into the American home through the centuries; from the DAR Library to one of the most celebrated and respected genealogical research centers in the country it was an amazing time.
With a day of immersive experiences leading into a star-studded evening performance by the legendary Patti LaBelle. The event served as both a celebration and a call to honor the legacy of women who have served this nation.
A Celebration Years in the Making
This was not an overnight production. DAR representatives shared that the organization—comprised of more than 190,000 members nationwide—has been preparing for this historic America 250 celebration for nearly a decade. That level of intention was evident in every detail.
Guests were invited earlier in the day to experience DAR’s headquarters through curated tours of the museum, genealogy library, and period rooms, offering a deeper connection to America’s founding story. It was a reminder that honoring the past is essential to understanding the present.
Service That Speaks Volumes
The evening program began promptly at 7 PM with a formal presentation that underscored the true purpose behind the celebration. During opening remarks, the 47th DAR President General Virginia Sebastian “Ginnie” Storage welcomed attendees and highlighted the organization’s ongoing commitment to service. In 2025 alone, DAR members collectively contributed over one million hours of volunteer service—a staggering reflection of impact at scale.
The numbers continued to tell the story:
- 25,000 scholarships awarded to students this year
- $650,000 in grants distributed to organizations dedicated to supporting women veterans
Former DAR President Commissioner Lyn Forney Young and for President General Pamela Rouse Wright also addressed the audience, reinforcing the importance of continued advocacy and investment in those who have served.
The Moment: Patti LaBelle Takes the Stage
Following the presentation, the energy in DAR Constitution Hall shifted as the audience prepared for an unforgettable performance of Patti LaBelle.
With a voice that has defined generations, LaBelle delivered a performance that was both soulful and celebratory, honoring women veterans through music that transcends time and speaks directly to resilience, strength, and legacy. Mrs Patti went through so many of her classic songs taking the crowd back down memory lane.
Every aspect of the evening beyond the ceremony was incredible. Patti Labelle’s concert of the evening transformed into an emotional, shared experience that connected every person in the room. The entire floor was totally immersed into her every word while she gained the attention of the crowd. For a woman of a particular age, she was moving and grooving like she was celebrating her 50th birthday.
More Than a Concert — A Cultural Statement
What made “DAR Celebrates America 250!” truly impactful was its layered intention.
This event seamlessly combined:
- Historical preservation
- Community service
- Cultural celebration
- National recognition
It positioned DAR not just as a historical organization, but as a living, active force shaping the future while honoring the past.
Final Word
As America approaches its 250th anniversary, events like this remind us that legacy is not just something we inherit—it’s something we actively build.
Through service, scholarship, and celebration, the Daughters of the American Revolution have created a moment that resonates far beyond one evening.
And with icons like Patti LaBelle lending their voice to the cause, one thing is clear:
The stories of women veterans are not only being honored—they are being amplified on the grandest stage.
