Amongst all the gloom and depressing politics, here’s a feel-good community story from Glengall Wharf Garden in Peckham.
Following a recent break-in that devastated their chicken coop and flock, the community rallied together through a public fundraiser to rebuild.

Their community chicken coop was broken into on 26th January 2026. Eight of the rescue chickens are missing and the rest were left to be attacked and killed by the foxes leaving one surviving hen – Pink.
Thanks to the generosity of local supporters, the team has not only restored and secure the coop but also taken in 14 additional rescue hens who arrived in poor condition.
After weeks of care and rehabilitation, the hens are now healthy, fluffy, and ready to meet the very people who helped save them.
To celebrate, Glengall Wharf Garden is hosting a Spring Fête on Sunday 3rd May (12–11pm), inviting the public to “meet The Hen Party” including fan favourites Pink, Chirpy, Harriet and Lilley.
The day will feature quirky, family-friendly activities such as chicken poo bingo, hug-a-hen sessions, chook walking, alongside a plant sale, sports day, raffle, workshops, tarot readings, and more. The event will close with a campfire supper, bar and live singing.
