Police officer pleads guilty to having sex multiple times with 13-year-old girl; Had sex with her in her mother’s house – showed up in police uniform

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 29-year-old police officer is behind bars tonight after pleading guilty in the High Court to four counts of Unlawful Sexual Intercourse (USI) involving a minor.

Police Constable Dexter Diego admitted to the charges on Monday morning before Justice Nigel Pilgrim. The trial was expected to begin on Monday but concluded in less than an hour when Diego entered guilty pleas on all counts. Diego had sex with the victim once when she was 13 years old and three times when she was 14 years old.

According to the agreed facts presented in court, Diego was a family friend who first became acquainted with the victim in 2022. Over a 10-month period, the two maintained regular communication and developed a close relationship in secret without the knowledge of the child’s mother.

The incidents took place between late 2022 and early 2023. The first instance occurred between late December 2022 and January 2023, when the 13-year-old victim was babysitting a relative’s children. Diego visited the home and engaged in sexual acts and repeated intercourse with the minor throughout the night, leading to a single charge for that date.

The remaining charges stem from three separate incidents in early 2023. Between mid-February and March 2023, Diego visited the victim’s home uninvited while her mother was away and had sexual intercourse with her. On February 27, 2023, Diego again visited the minor at her home around 9:00 a.m. and engaged in sexual intercourse. The final incident took place on March 26, 2023, when Diego visited the victim’s house while dressed in his police uniform and had sexual intercourse with her.

Diego was represented in court by attorney Hurl Hamilton. The prosecution was represented by Crown Counsel Shannel Fernandez-Peyrefitte.

Justice Pilgrim has deferred sentencing until September 8, 2026. Before delivering the sentence, the court has ordered the preparation of a Prison Report, a Social Inquiry Report, and a Victim Impact Statement. Diego remains in custody pending his sentencing hearing.
