Polokwane City coach quits to join PSL rivals

Marumo Gallants have confirmed the appointment of Phuti Mohafe as their new head coach ahead of the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season.

Mohafe joins Marumo Gallants from Polokwane City, where he earned praise for guiding the Limpopo-based side through a period of steady progress in the top flight.

Polokwane City finished seventh last season, qualifying for the lucrative MTN8 this coming season.

The appointment comes after Marumo Gallants successfully retained their Betway Premiership status on the final day of last season, avoiding relegation and securing another campaign among South Africa’s elite clubs.

Marumo Gallants ultimately ended 14th in the 16-team league.

Respected coach

In a statement announcing the move, the club described Mohafe as one of the country’s respected coaches, highlighting his extensive experience, leadership qualities and deep understanding of the local football landscape.

“Marumo Gallants F.C. is pleased to announce the appointment of Phuti Mohafe as the Club’s new Head Coach,” the club said.

Marumo Gallants believe the appointment signals the beginning of an exciting new era as they look to build on their survival and establish themselves as a more competitive force in the Premiership.

Mohafe’s track record of working effectively with players and developing competitive teams was a key factor in the club’s decision to hand him the reins.

Eager to avoid a relegation battle

The new coach is expected to begin preparations for the upcoming season immediately, with Marumo Gallants eager to avoid another relegation battle and climb the league standings.

His departure leaves Polokwane City searching for a new head coach ahead of the new campaign, while Marumo Gallants will hope the experienced tactician can bring stability and success to the club.

With pre-season preparations gathering pace across the Betway Premiership, Mohafe now faces the challenge of turning Marumo Gallants into a team capable of competing comfortably in the top flight rather than fighting for survival.
