Pop goes to China

Namibian filmmaker Jacky Pop is currently in China finalising a global distribution deal for his upcoming web series ‘Omunahambo Wange Season 3’ while exploring new project collaborations.

The actor and founder of Films Icon, Jackson Nghinamhito, is adding the final touches to the deal for the much-anticipated Oshiwambo-Chinese web series.

The new season, which was filmed in China late last year, is expected to mark another major milestone for Namibia’s growing film industry by introducing local storytelling to international audiences.

Pop says his recent trip is aimed at building momentum ahead of the official release of the series while also opening doors for Namibian productions on the global stage.

“This visit to China is also mainly connected to a documentary project commissioned to our company, although the details are still private for now,” he says.

He says local film lovers can expect more updates about the release once he returns to Namibia.

During his trip to China, Pop met with several creatives involved in the production of the web series, including director Arden Kwok and producer Zhou Suyue, to discuss future collaboration.

He also reunited with Chinese actress Fu Yi, who stars in a leading role in the upcoming season.

Pop says the journey to China is deeply personal.

“When growing up at Eenhana, I spent hours watching Jackie Chan movies,” he says.

“The thrill, humour, and the storyline all amazed me, although at my age I could not grasp the whole magic of the movies, but I was determined to be an actor.”

Years later, the dream inspired by Chinese cinema has taken him across continents and helped shape his career as an actor and filmmaker.

“Today, as an actor, filmmaker and founder of Films Icon, I find myself once again walking through the streets of China, this time in Jiangxi province after arriving through Shanghai.

“This is my fourth time visiting China, but each visit seems to be the start of a new story,” he says.

Pop says he has been to many cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Changsha, and Nanyue, places that “constantly inspire” him.

Throughout his visits, he has built friendships with filmmakers, students, doctors, lawyers and business people, saying the warmth and kindness he receives continues to remind him that storytelling can connect people beyond language and culture.
