*Quinta Brunson has a new role in the works, and it is one of the most recognizable faces in animation history.
The “Abbott Elementary” creator and star is set to play Betty Boop in a new feature film, Variety reports. Brunson’s production company, Fifth Chance Productions, is developing the project alongside Mark Fleischer, grandson of Betty Boop creator Max Fleischer.
Rather than centering the story on Betty Boop as a finished cultural product, the film will dig into how she came to exist – following Max Fleischer as he faced the artistic and business demands of creating one of animation’s first breakout stars, and grappling with what happens when that creation grows bigger than its maker.
Betty Boop first appeared in the animated series “Talkartoon” in 1930 before expanding into theatrical shorts, comic strips, television, and most recently Broadway’s “Boop! The Musical.” The character entered the public domain on January 1, 2026.
“Betty Boop is one of our nation’s most beloved cartoon characters, yet somehow still remains pleasantly niche,” Brunson said. “She has had a quiet but undeniable impact on culture for nearly a century.”
Brunson’s project took on new depth after she and Fifth Chance’s head of creative affairs, Erin Wehrenberg, sat down with Fleischer and heard his grandfather’s story firsthand. “I realized there was a much deeper story to tell,” Brunson said. “One that could be explored in a way that feels refreshing, subversive, and timeless, much like Betty herself.”
Fleischer was equally enthusiastic about the pairing. “Quinta so embodies Betty’s love of life, intelligence, humor, sassiness and compassion that the relationship between her as Betty and Max burst into life at its mere mention,” he told Variety, adding that he was “breathtaken” by Brunson’s vision for the project.
