As Minister Oneetse Ramogapi moves to consolidate control over Botswana Housing Corporation (BHC) and its multi-billion Pula Bonno National Housing Programme, a disturbing pattern is emerging – the corporation’s internal watchdogs are disappearing: auditors, lawyers, finance chiefs and risk officers, paid to stop shady dealing, are either resigning, being dismissed or challenging BHC in court. This is raising questions about whether the institution’s system of checks and balances is being systematically weakened.
The BHC has lost at least a dozen senior executives, mostly the “guardians of the gate” since Ramogapi took over as Minister of Water and Human Settlement – Sunday Standard investigations have revealed.
