Johannesburg singer-songwriter Rethabile Khumalo enters a deeply personal new chapter with the release of her third studio album Kwelizayo, an emotionally charged tribute to her late mother, South African music icon Winnie Khumalo.
Available now for pre-save ahead of its official release tomorrow, Kwelizayo captures Rethabile at her most vulnerable and reflective, transforming grief, healing, and self-discovery into a powerful body of work rooted in love and legacy. The project is introduced by the poignant focus single “Bagolo,” a song that sets the emotional and sonic tone for the album through soulful storytelling and rich African musical textures.
Created over several months following Winnie Khumalo’s passing, the album reflects Rethabile’s journey through mourning and personal growth. Rather than simply documenting loss, Kwelizayo becomes a space for spiritual reflection and emotional restoration, blending heartfelt songwriting with themes of resilience, identity, and hope.
The project also celebrates South Africa’s cultural richness through the seamless use of isiZulu, isiXhosa, and Sepedi, giving the album a broad emotional and generational resonance. One of its most moving moments comes through a special pre-recorded contribution from Winnie Khumalo herself, creating a symbolic and deeply touching connection between mother and daughter that reinforces the album’s central themes of memory and continuity.
Speaking about the project, Rethabile describes Kwelizayo as more than just music, calling it “healing, legacy and love.” The album represents a turning point in her artistic evolution, shaped by the process of rediscovering herself while carrying forward her mother’s influence and spirit.
Rethabile’s career has continued to rise steadily since her breakthrough success with the multi-platinum hit “Umlilo” alongside DJ Zinhle and Mvzzle. She later strengthened her standing in South African music with the platinum-certified “Ntyilo Ntyilo” featuring Master KG, while her 2024 single “Egalile” expanded her reach through viral success on TikTok and streaming platforms.
Now releasing music independently under WINNKAY MUSIC RECORDS, Rethabile steps confidently into a new creative era — one defined not only by artistic growth but by emotional honesty and personal purpose.
With Kwelizayo, Rethabile Khumalo delivers more than an album. It is a heartfelt tribute, a healing process, and a celebration of womanhood, heritage, and enduring love.
