SA Mint launches ambitious NEW multi-million-rand coin collection

The SA Mint’s latest multi-million-rand coin collection – the African Range – is a high-value coin that’s worth way more than the face-value denomination. That’s because they come in one-, two-, five-, and 10-ounce gold and silver proof.

Plus, there are one-kilogram formats in both gold and silver, and those are worth millions of rands! That’s because, in part, they were designed by internationally acclaimed South African artist Dylan Lewis. And also because this new multi-million-rand coin collection promises to be incredibly rare …

SA MINT MULTI-MILLION-RAND COIN COLLECTION

Accordingly, the multi-million-rand coin collection debuts with a five-coin cheetah series (pictured) that unfolds as a ‘narrative of the hunt.’ It starts with the animal’s watchful survey of the landscape. Moves through to the stalk and explosive chase. And finally, onto the decisive capture and final repose.

Each SA Mint coin is based on existing wildlife sculptures by the aforementioned Dylan Lewis. Gorgeous work that has been exhibited in London, Paris and New York. Translating the three-dimensional works into coin format, preserving the depth and texture of the originals, took meticulous work.

FLAGSHIP COLLECTION FOR AFRICA

More importantly, to aficionados and investors, the multi-million-rand coin collection is not your everyday pocket change. Based on the current gold price, the top-of-the-range one-kilogram gold coin is worth R3.7 million. And even the one-ounce gold coin upwards of R75 000. Perhaps confusingly, that makes the face value of the coin largely ceremonial.

As ever, what drives value is the quantity and purity of the precious metals these coins contain. South Africa is one of the world’s leading gold-producing nations, and the SA Mint has more than capitalised with the world-famous Krugerrand over the decades.

GREAT PRIDE IN SA’S MULTI-MILLION-RAND COIN COLLECTION

“This multi-million-rand coin collection is one of the most exciting products we have introduced in decades. Our ambition was to create a flagship collection that reflects Africa’s natural beauty, craftsmanship and artistic excellence,” says the SA Mint’s Richard Stone. And the timing couldn’t be better, as South Africa’s coins and currency market – like the Big Five series and Krugerrand – remains buoyant.
