Saint Lucia braces for Saharan dust plume

Saint Lucia is expected to experience a plume of Saharan dust in the coming days, bringing hazy skies and vivid sunsets  but also potential health concerns, particularly for vulnerable groups.

The Ministry of Health is urging residents to take precautionary measures to protect their well-being as dust concentrations increase. Officials are advising the public to limit outdoor exposure, wear protective masks and stay hydrated.

Health authorities warn that fine dust particles can aggravate respiratory conditions and trigger symptoms such as persistent coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, eye irritation and throat discomfort.

Individuals experiencing these symptoms are encouraged to seek medical advice promptly. Extra caution is advised for children, the elderly, and persons with asthma or other pre-existing respiratory illnesses.

Saharan dust originates from the vast Sahara Desert in North Africa, the world’s largest hot desert. During late spring and summer, strong surface winds lift fine particles of sand and mineral dust into the atmosphere. These particles are then carried thousands of miles westward across the Atlantic Ocean by prevailing trade winds.

Residents are encouraged to monitor official updates and take recommended precautions until the plume passes and air quality improves.
