Just when you thought The Boys couldn’t get any more irreverent, a legend has entered the chat. In the latest episode of Season 5, fans were hit with a massive “did that just happen?” moment when none other than Samuel L. Jackson made a surprise appearance, though not in the way you might expect.

While viewers are used to seeing Jackson as the ultimate authority figure (looking at you, Nick Fury), his role in the world of Vought is a bit more… aquatic. Jackson provides the voice for Xander the Shark, a character that fits perfectly into the show’s dark, satirical humor.

The cameo serves as a brilliant nod to Jackson’s iconic filmography, specifically the 1999 cult classic Deep Blue Sea. For fans of the show, seeing a shark with the voice and legendary “motherf—er” intensity of Samuel L. Jackson is the kind of meta-casting that has made The Boys a staple of modern television.

In the scene, Xander the Shark confronts The Deep (Chace Crawford):

“Shut the fuck up. We know you were responsible for the pipeline genocide. Remember March 15, motherfucker!”

When The Deep tries to plead his case, Xander doubles down with a threat that makes the entire ocean feel like a danger zone:

“If you step one foot, one fucking stupid-ass simian toe in the water, anywhere, an ocean, a stream, a fucking puddle, oh, God, son, you’re dead… Water is fucking off-limits to you. You are dead to us. Bitches!”

Showrunner Eric Kripke has a knack for pulling in heavy hitters for unexpected roles (we still haven’t forgotten Charlize Theron as Stormfront in the Dawn of the Seven movie-within-a-movie). Landing Jackson, however, feels like a new peak for the series.

Jackson’s performance as Xander isn’t just a quick one-liner; it’s a scene-stealing moment that balances the show’s trademark gore with a level of gravitas that only an Academy Award-winning veteran can bring.

The season finale of The Boys airs Wednesday, May 20.
