Sean’s INCREDIBLE Story From the Streets to Aspiring Doccie Filmmaker!

He once had nothing, but today he has a home, a job, and a documentary in the works. This is the good that one small act of kindness can set in motion!

Johannesburg, South Africa (07 May 2026) – Sometimes just a single flicker of hope can change someone’s life entirely, and Sean’s glimmer came when he chose to walk into a shelter.

One Small Act of Kindness first met Sean on the streets of inner Joburg. Many living in circumstances as he did often suffered from addiction, but his struggles were rooted in trauma and heartbreak from a very painful past.

The team at OSAOK saw something powerful within him because he had the will to make a change.

“Sean took a chance he visited a shelter and was accepted. From there, everything began to change. He started volunteering, and we worked with him to build his CV and help him get back on his feet.” the organisation shares.

Through them, Sean started volunteering, built his CV, and took his first steps back into the world. Before long, he had a job and stability. Then a home that was furnished with the help of supporters who believed in a man they’d never even met.

“Today, Sean has a place of his own a home so many of you helped furnish and make possible. And wow…he is truly looking forward to the future.”

In a letter Sean wrote to the OSAOK team about two years ago, his gratitude spilled out in the most moving way. It was also a testament to the new beginnings that organisations like OSAOK help make happen.

“I wanted to thank you for every little thing that you think might have been little was actually big for me. From keeping me fed, or rather keeping us fed, at the shelter you kept us warm, you kept us motivated and encouraged us. You kept us entertained with books, with gym equipment. Thank you for giving me an opportunity to volunteer at your house. That kept my mind active and recharged me in a way that made me forgive myself. Being a part of your team at One Small Act of Kindness humbled me, and allowed me to see what’s it like on the other side. From being part of the line at the feeding to being on the other end dishing up. I felt that emotion, listening to other peoples problems, coming up with solutions to solve the problems. I grew into being a team player, I grew mentally. You accepted me and took me into your home allowing me to be uncle Sean to those beautiful tiny souls! You made me feel like I am part of a family…something I’ve never had! And that means the world to me! You’ve done so much for me! And I am truly grateful for every everything!”

Words that leave a proper lump in your throat. The best news is that Sean is thriving today. His dreams are taking him places. He sees a bright future ahead for himself. One that years ago, he couldn’t.

The organisation has shared that Sean is working on a documentary that tells his own life story, born from a want to spread hope to others who may feel the same despair he once did. His dream is to one day see it on Netflix or DStv.

“Keep an eye out for his documentary his dream is to one day see it on Netflix or DStv! And we truly believe he can do it!”

While they were able to offer a hand up, Sean did all of the rest himself. As powerful as compassion is, the drive to change must ultimately come from within.

“There was a time when Sean had no hope until he saw a small flicker of light through our charity. He took that chance with both hands and ran with it. While we were able to offer a hand up, Sean did the rest.”

One Small Act of Kindness serves hundreds of children, families, and displaced individuals across the city. The organisation also runs a charity nursery school with 100 children enrolled, a men’s shelter providing safe housing and support for 40 displaced men year-round, a weekly food parcel drive delivering over 200 parcels to struggling families, charity shops that support those in need, and regular care for the elderly in the Johannesburg area.
