NEWLY elected Federation of Cycling Lesotho (FCL) president, Agnes Selepe, has pledged to usher in a new era of unity, transparency and development as she takes over the leadership of the sport.

Selepe, who emerged victorious at the federation’s elective general meeting held over the weekend in Maseru, said she was honoured by the confidence shown in her by members and vowed to work tirelessly to uplift cycling in the country.

Speaking to the Lesotho Times this week, Selepe thanked federation members for entrusting her with the responsibility of leading the sport and commended everyone who participated in the electoral process.

“I am deeply honoured and humbled to have been elected president of the Federation of Cycling Lesotho. I sincerely thank all members who placed their trust and confidence in me,” Selepe said.

“I also extend my appreciation to everyone who participated in the electoral process, as our shared commitment is to the growth and success of cycling.”

Having been involved with the federation since 2018, Selepe said her experience has given her a clear understanding of both the achievements and challenges facing the sport.

She believes the next four years present an opportunity to rebuild the federation and create a stronger foundation for the future.

Selepe outlined an ambitious vision centred on improving governance, strengthening unity among stakeholders and increasing participation in cycling across the country.

She also prioritised the development of young riders and better support for athletes, coaches and officials, while seeking stronger partnerships with sponsors, government and other stakeholders.

“My vision for the next four years is to build a stronger, more united federation by improving governance, increasing participation, developing young talent, supporting athletes, coaches and officials, strengthening partnerships, and promoting cycling throughout the country,” she said.

“Together, we will work to create more opportunities for riders at all levels and raise the standard of cycling nationally and internationally.”

Selepe described her election as the beginning of a new chapter for cycling in Lesotho, saying meaningful progress would only be achieved through collective effort.

She called on clubs, riders, officials and sponsors to work together to transform the sport and ensure it reaches greater heights.

“I believe this is the beginning of a new chapter for our sport. I look forward to working closely with clubs, athletes, officials, sponsors, government and all stakeholders to build a sustainable future for cycling,” she said.

Rather than waiting for long-term plans to take shape, Selepe urged the cycling community to immediately rally behind competitors and officials at the federation’s upcoming races.

“Let’s begin this new chapter not just with words, but by supporting our riders and officials at this weekend’s races,” she said.

Selepe concluded by stressing that cycling is a sport that belongs to everyone and that its success will depend on unity and shared commitment.

“Cycling belongs to all of us, and together we can achieve great things.”

Her election is expected to bring renewed optimism within the cycling fraternity as members look forward to a fresh administration focused on development, good governance and creating opportunities for cyclists at every level.

Selepe succeeds former president, Rammotang Makatile, who did not seek re-election after leading the federation since 2018.

The new executive committee also includes Malefane Morie as vice-president, Masita Ntsimane as vice secretary-general, Kutloano Lerata as treasurer, Liteboho Letlala as social events manager and Phakamile Xingwana as commissioner for development.

The positions of secretary-general and technical director remain vacant after no candidates were nominated for either post. The federation is expected to decide on the process of filling the vacancies in due course.
