Serendipity Remembers: September 2026

Mary Church Terrell, born 23 September 1863 in Memphis, Tennessee, was a pioneering African American civil rights activist, educator and writer whose work laid critical foundations for Black women’s political organising in the United States.  Born to formerly enslaved parents who became successful entrepreneurs, Terrell was among the first Black women to earn a college degree and used her education to challenge racial and gender inequality at a national level.

Terrell’s significance lies in her leadership at the intersection of race, gender and citizenship.  She was a founding member of the National Association of Coloured Women (NACW) and later an early member of the NAACP, advocating for suffrage, anti-lynching legislation, desegregation and equal education.  Her activism insisted that Black women’s rights could not be postponed or subordinated within either civil rights or feminist movements.

As a writer and public intellectual, Terrell documented the lived realities of Black women navigating systemic exclusion in post-Reconstruction America.  Her speeches and writings challenged both white supremacy and the limitations of mainstream feminism, asserting Black women’s moral authority and political agency.  Terrell’s legacy endures as a foundational figure in Black feminist thought and civil rights history, whose life and work demonstrate the long struggle for equality across generations.
