Somali Future Council warns against extending mandates of president, parliament

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – The Somali Future Council said Monday it will not accept any extension of the terms of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Somalia’s federal parliament once their mandates expire, warning that such a move could trigger the same political turmoil that erupted in Mogadishu in 2021.

In a statement, the council cautioned that extending the mandates could lead to a repeat of the unrest that saw rival factions of security forces clash in the streets of Mogadishu after the administration of former President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed attempted a similar move.

The council said it recognizes only the provisions of the Provisional Constitution of Somalia, under which the current president and members of parliament were sworn into office. According to the constitution, the council said, the mandate of parliament expires on April 14, while the president’s term ends on May 15.

The council also urged regional states aligned with the federal government that have not yet held elections to conduct the votes in order to avert a potential political crisis.

It warned that the country stands at a critical juncture and said the only viable path forward is adherence to constitutional timelines, reaching a political settlement on elections and safeguarding Somalia’s federal system.
