South African institution named Africa’s top university in new global ranking
New global rankings have named a well-known South African institution as Africa's top university and placed it 200th worldwide.
The University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) has been named the highest-ranked university in Africa in the 2026 Center for World University Rankings (CWUR).
The Johannesburg-based university was also ranked 200th globally out of 21 291 universities assessed, placing it firmly in the top 1% worldwide.
The ranking is a significant achievement for South African higher education, particularly as competition among global institutions continues to intensify.
Wits gains recognition for research and graduate success
Unlike many international rankings that rely heavily on surveys and self-reported data, the CWUR uses measurable indicators to assess universities across four key areas: education, employability, faculty excellence and research performance.
According to Wits Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Zeblon Vilakazi, the ranking reflects the collective efforts of the university’s students, academics, researchers, alumni and partners.
“This ranking is important because it uses objective data to rank universities on education, research, faculty and the employability of graduates,” Vilakazi said.
One of Wits’ standout achievements was its Employability Rank of 97 globally, highlighting the strong demand for its graduates in the local and international job market.
The university also achieved a Faculty Rank of 87, reflecting the strength of its academic and research community.
A win for South African higher education
The achievement is not only a milestone for Wits but also highlights the growing global recognition of African universities.
As institutions across the continent continue to expand their research output and international influence, rankings such as the CWUR suggest that African universities are increasingly competing on equal footing with some of the world’s most established institutions.
The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2026 also ranked the world’s top institutions last year, and Wits ranked second, featuring within the 201–300 range. The University of Cape Town (UCT) claimed the top spot in South Africa, breaking into the world’s top 200.
